Wrestler Springberg places second in Bonney Lake Classic

Mountlake Terrace junior Syd Springberg proved his title at the Lynnwood Classic last month was no fluke as he placed second in the 170-pound class at this past Saturday’s Bonney Lake Classic. After three victories, two by pinfall, Springberg’s only loss at the tournament was in the final to Brian Cristion of Port Angeles.

Springberg led a contingent of Hawk wrestlers that did well at the wrestling tournament that drew 20 teams, several highly-ranked in the state, to Bonney Lake High School over the weekend. As a team Terrace finished 14th scoring 58.5 points.

The strong showing by the Hawks was accomplished despite traveling to the event with less than a full squad. “Due to injuries, we only took 10 wrestlers, four of which were first year wrestlers,” said MTHS head coach Kanoe Vierra.

In addition to Springberg’s runner-up placement at 170 pounds, other Hawk notables included Trung Banh finishing fourth in the 106 pound weight class, Taron Castleton grabbing fifth at 132 pounds, and David Marr placing eighth at 182 pounds.

Banh picked up a major decision, 16-1, in the 106=pound class’ first round, then two more wins in the consolation bracket, but couldn’t get past Branden Huft of Mount Vernon; Huft defeated Banh twice during the tournament. Castleton went 3-2 on the day, two of his victories by pinfall. Marr lost in his opening round bout to the eventually 182 pound class champion, Taylor Ladenburg of Bellarmine Prep, then won two straight before finishing the day going down in a tight match to James Dobosz of Pasco, 4-2.

Other Hawks competing at Bonney Lake on Saturday included Taylor Hethington, Marqueta Johnson, Danil Oliferovskiy, Brett Potter, Taylor Murgallis and Colin Loyles.

“Overall the Hawks wrestled tough throughout the whole tournament against some really tough competition,” Vierra added.

The Mountlake Terrace wrestlers will next take on the state’s 19th-ranked 3A team, the Shorewood T-Birds, Thursday, Jan. 10, at Mountlake Terrace High School. The dual meet begins at 7 p.m.
