With tentative Waste Management agreement, special waste collection for MLT residents Saturday

A special collection of garbage, recyclables and yard waste by Waste Management drivers is scheduled for Mountlake Terrace residents on Saturday, Aug. 4. City residents are advised to have all their waste and recyclable receptacles out for pick-up by 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The special curbside collection was negotiated between Mountlake Terrace city officials and Waste Management Wednesday as the tentative agreement was being formulated between striking recycling and yard waste drivers and Waste Management.

Teamsters Local 117, the recycling and yard waste drivers, was scheduled to vote on the tentative agreement reached between the union and Waste Management on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 9 a.m.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, the city was discussing options with Waste Management “to identify a plan specific for our community to deal with accumulating garbage and recyclables,” said John Caulfield, Mountlake Terrace City Manager. One idea on the table was to establish collection locations around the city that residents could bring their garbage and recyclables to for dumping.

The City of Mountlake Terrace was also having attorneys review the contract between the city and Waste Management earlier Wednesday in preparation for the city to possibly enact fines against the company for failing to provide collection service to the community.

It is unclear if the city will continue to pursue fines against Waste Management now that curbside collection by the company appears to be starting up again.
