Weekend idea: Fall colors on Highway 2

Photographer Bill Ray recommends a drive along Highway 2 toward Leavenworth to see fall colors.

“Generally there is still plenty of color with more to come — except in Leavenworth itself which is past the peak,” he said. “Index and Eagle Falls are spectacular and not that far away. They make a dandy half-day trip. The Eagle Falls turnouts are a few miles past Index at mile post 39, with a short, careful scramble down to the river.

If the whole day is available, you can continue to Leavenworth. “Once the Wenatchee River crosses under the highway nearing Leavenworth there are many photo opportunities with turnouts,” Ray said. “The stop at about mile 93.5 offers a calm stretch with lovely reflections.  There is an old bridge crossing the river at about 97.2 miles. “A few minutes more brings you to town for lunch.”
