The Mountlake Terrace volleyball team went into Wednesday’s Wesco 3A match against Everett still looking for its first win of the 2015 season. The squad will have to wait a little longer for that first victory.

The Seagulls came out on the winning side of a 3-1 score (28-30, 25-17, 25-21, 25-15) in a match that was much closer than the final tally might indicate.

Despite the defeat, Mountlake Terrace Head Coach Rene Noeun commended her squad following the match. “They’re hustling, they’re improving. I’m a really proud coach right now,” she said. “I had nothing negative to say to them. It was a tough loss, but they tried hard. They didn’t give up, and that’s all a coach can ask for.”

The Hawk’s never-say-die attitude was most evident in the first set of the match. With a 24-17 lead, Everett needed just one more point for the set win. But Mountlake Terrace stormed back with eight straight points to take a 25-24 advantage. The Hawks eventually prevailed in the first set 30-28, but only after turning away 10 set point chances by the Seagulls.

Mountlake Terrace held the lead at times in each of the four sets played on Wednesday. In the pivotal third set, the teams were tied at 20-20 before Everett won five of the set’s seven final points, winning the set 25-22 and taking a 2-1 game lead. As the Hawks faded in the match’s final set, Everett finally claimed victory 25-15 and the match win 3-1.

Noeun was most pleased with her squad’s floor coverage on defense. Sophie Parsons led the Hawks in digs with seven; the sophomore also tallied 23 assists. “We’re still working on finishing points in terms of kills, but they’re hustle is there,” Noeun said.

Mountlake Terrace’s next chance to earn its first win of the year will be Tuesday, Oct. 6, when the Hawks travel to Shorewood. But the challenge will be stiff; the undefeated Thunderbirds are the No. 9-ranked team in the latest Seattle Times 3A State Volleyball poll. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

In other Mountlake Terrace action on Wednesday, the boys tennis team slipped past Meadowdale 4-3 at Mountlake Terrace High School. The Shorecrest Scots will be the next opponent for both the Hawks and the Mavericks; Meadowdale hosts Shorecrest on Thursday, Oct. 1, while Mountalke Terrace will play the Scots on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
