The story below is from the City’s of Mountlake Terrace’s newsletter called City Happenings. We will be highlighting some of the stories this week. To read the entire newsletter, view the PDF at CityofMLT.com.

[box type”normal]There are many civic-minded organizations and a host of volunteers that make Mountlake Terrace a wonderful community.

Three groups receive limited funding by the city — Mountlake Terrace Garden Club, Mountlake Terrace Seniors Group, and Tour de Terrace for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Other groups such as Friends of the Arts and Tour de Terrace summer festival apply each year for hotel/motel tax funds that support programs or events that promote overnight stays in Studio 6, the city’s only lodging facility.

The volunteers give of their time and talents to add value to our community and promote quality of life. You see it as you drive by the beautiful flowers at the library, parks and city entry sites. The Garden Club members maintain those sites and their volunteers also provide assistance for the city’s Evergreen Award program. Many of its members say they join because they love gardening and getting together with friends. You can reach the Garden Club at (425) 774-8440 or mltgardenclub.com.

The Seniors Group is very active and they provide important services for folks over 55. The Seniors meet in a house at 5605 235 th Street and they have two weekly luncheons at Bethesda Lutheran Church next door. Many of the lunches have featured speakers and the group has frequent social opportunities such as cards and games, crab feeds, auctions, and bake sales. They also have field trips with van transportation for those who do not drive. The Seniors Group offers health and wellness activities as well as learning opportunities so give them a call today at (425) 672-2407 to find out more. If not, you are missing out!

Each December, local families and neighbors of Evergreen Playfield look forward to the Tree Lighting or ceremonial lighting of the lights on top of the city’s water tower. This event is put on by the dedicated Tour de Terrace volunteers who have been giving back to our community for over 15 years. They also work tirelessly on the Tour de Terrace summer festival. This group is always looking for more hands to help as their events grow in popularity each year. Please contact info@tourdeterrace.org or call (425) 791-5956 and leave a message to learn more.

There are other opportunities for you to volunteer in Mountlake Terrace including Crime Watch, MLTDOG for the Off-Leash Dog Park, Spring Park Clean Up, Friends of the Arts, Friends of the Library, Friends of the Farmers Market, Mountlake Terrace Youth Athletic Association, and the Rotary Community Homework Center. You may also apply to serve on a city board or commission. For information about any of these groups, please contact Community Relations Director Virginia Olsen at volsen@ci.mlt.wa.us or (425) 744-6206.[/box]
