With a 3-0 victory over Shorecrest, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks won the 3A Wesco League Volleyball championship on Wednesday night and will carry the No. 1 seed into the District 1 3A Volleyball Tournament next week.
Terrace will host two of the first-round tourney games, including their match-up with the No. 8 seed, either Shorewood, Glacier Peak or Oak Harbor, on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The match between seeds No. 4 versus No. 5 will begin at 5 p.m.; the Mountlake Terrace match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Mountlake Terrace will also host second round action on Thursday, Nov. 7, with matches scheduled for 5 and 7np.m. The final two matches in the district tourney will be held at Glacier Peak High School on Nov. 9; the top three teams from the tournament will advance to the WIAA 3A State Volleyball Championships Nov. 15-16 in Lacey.
While Terrace did earn the No. 1 seed in the district tournament, the Hawks are by no means guaranteed to move on to state. The District 1 tourney is loaded, and includes Everett, a state qualifier last year and holder of a 12-3 record this season; Meadowdale, a team that matched Terrace’s record this year of 8-1 in Wesco League play and 11-3 overall; a 10-4 Stanwood team that beat the Hawks 3-1 on Oct. 15; and the darkhorse Ferndale Golden Eagles, winners of seven of their last eight and 10-4 this season.
On Wednesday, the Hawks’ prevailed in straight sets over the Scots 25-17, 25-20, 27-25, but only after coming back from five-point deficits twice in the third set. Down 10-5 and 22-17, Terrace charged back off of strong front line place from seniors Justine Kelly and Madison Eich.
Wednesday’s victory for Terrace came on Senior Night as the school honored the five senior members on the squad, Kelly, Eich, Meg Roberts, Lillanne Nguyen and Micha Jackson. It was to be the final home match the seniors were to play, but they can now look forward to more home court action as the top seed and hosting duties in the district tournament beginning on Tuesday.
