Videos highlight MLT elementary bicycling, school district’s Move60 programs

Mountlake Terrace Elementary students and staff are featured in two videos showcasing an innovative bicycle program at Mountlake Terrace Elementary as well as enhanced recess and after-school fitness programs available at elementary schools across the Edmonds School District.

The Edmonds Bicycle Advocacy Group worked with the Cascade Bicycle Club to bring a Basics of Bicycling program to the Edmonds School District starting in fall 2010. The three-week bike safety program for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders teaches safe habits at an early age, makes exercise fun and instills healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Bicycle Advocacy Group leader Jan Ahlquist Niemi gave special recognition to Mountlake Terrace Elementary Principal Doug Johnson for being “very involved and innovated.”

“Thanks to all the partners involved, the students have access to bicycles, education and safe routes to school – and they are moving daily with the Move60 and the Basics Of Bicycling programs,” Ahlquist-Niemi said.

Salud America!, a Texas-based organization that focuses on obesity prevention among Latino children, produced the videos.
