Two Mountlake Terrace High School students earned recognition at the National Technology Student Association Convention June 28-July 2 in Texas.

At the convention awards ceremony, Haeley Johnston received the Dr. Bob Hanson Distinguished Student Award. The award recognizes leadership, community service and contributions to the success and growth of the Technology Student Associaton (TSA).

“I was honored to be chosen from the 234,000 members nationwide,” Johnston said. “Being able to be recognized in front of my peers at a national conference was the highlight of my TSA career thus far.”

Kathleen Cram also was honored at the convention with a Gold Achievement Award for leadership, community involvement and promoting STEM education.

Students involved in TSA extend the study of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) beyond the classroom. They are presented with exciting academic challenges and engage with peers interested in similar activities. Students at the high school level work individually or as a team in competitions in variety of scientific areas. The group of delegates, who were representing Washington state, included Connor Ebright, Liam Madson and Jonathan Thiem. These students qualified by placing in the top three of their competitive categories at the state convention. While at nationals, the students took part in events such as leadership training, career preparation, debating technological issues, children’s stories, essays on technology, problem-solving, structural engineering and a “Knowledge Bowl.”

The Foundation For Edmonds School District presented a grant award to the MTHS TSA delegates in partnership with The DLR Group and Skanska, to the MTHS delegates to help with their travel costs. To keep up with the exciting achievements of this TSA group, follow them on Facebook.
