Two local elementary schools will compete in reading challenge

sil-logo-275x107-1Brier Elementary School and Cedar Way Elementary School are two of the seven schools with teams that will compete in the Sno-Isle Libraries Third-Grade Reading Challenge on Tuesday night.

The quiz-bowl program encourages children to enjoy reading and improve literacy skills by quizzing them on six books. Teams qualified for the finals by competing in a series of regional events.

Cedar Way and Brier are the only two schools from the Edmonds School District to qualify. Other competing schools come from Stanwood, Lake Stevens, Oak Harbor, Snohomish and Mukilteo school districts.

The six books selected for this year’s challenge are:

  • “Adventures of a South Pole Pig,” by Chris Kurtz
  • “The Great Cake Mystery,” by Alexander McCall Smith
  • “The Lemonade War,” by Jacqueline Davies
  • “The Mouse and the Motorcycle,” by Beverly Cleary
  • “Odd, Weird, & Little,” by Patrick Jennings
  • “The Sasquatch Escape,” by Suzanne Selfors

The event is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at the Lake Stevens High School Performing Arts Center, located at 2908 113th Ave. NE. in Lake Stevens.
