Two Hawks competing at this week’s State Wrestling and Swimming Championships

Taron Castleton is the lone Mountlake Terrace wrestler at this week’s state championships.

Two Mountlake Terrace Hawks will be heading south down I-5 this week in hopes of bringing home a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) state title.

Senior Taron Castleton will be competing in his first Mat Classic, the State Wrestling Championships, at the Tacoma Dome on Friday and Saturday. Castleton takes on No. 1-ranked Matt Iwicki of Eastside Catholic in the opening match of the 145-pound class at approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday. Win-or-lose, Castleton will face another top-ranked wrestler in either Zach Koeller of Bonney Lake or AJ Hoggatt of Kelso in the second round of the double-elimination tournament at approximately 5:30 p.m.

At the 3A Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Hawk senior Sam Armentrout will take on 23 other competitors in the 200-yard individual medley at the King County Aquatic Center. The 200 IM preliminary heats are scheduled to run early in the 9:45 a.m. Friday session of the state championships. The 200 IM finals are set for Saturday morning.

Castleton and Armentrout were the only Hawks from the wrestling and boys swim teams that qualified for their respective state championship events.

Mat Classic XXVII at the Tacoma Dome begins at 10 a.m. on Friday; the Boys Swimming and Diving State Meet in Federal Way begins on Friday at 9:45 a.m. Both events continue through Saturday. Tickets for each day are $9 for adults, $7 for students with valid ASB cards and seniors 62 years old and older; two-day event passes are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.
