Two student athletes from the Mountlake Terrace High School cross country team have been selected to be profiled on the December edition of the MTHS December Athlete Highlights poster put out by the school’s Sports Booster Club.

Daniel Medhane, from the boys cross country squad, and Katherine Walter, from the girls team, were selected by Coach Todd Weber for the honor.

“Daniel has only been running for a little over a year, but you wouldn’t know that based on his results,” Weber said. “He was our top runner this year and placed 10th overall in the Wesco (League) South Championships and has set himself up for the possibility of running in college if he chooses.”

Weber not only praised Medhane for his effort in cross country competition but also for his character. “Daniel is easy going, has a great sense of humor and strong work ethic,” he said. “I am lucky to have coached him the past two cross country seasons.”

Weber also had glowing comments about junior Katherine Walter. “One of the most dependable and dedicated athletes I have ever coached; extremely talented runner — 22nd at state — wonderful teammate and solid leader” he said. “Katherine inspires her teammates through her positive outlook on life and being one of the hardest workers on the team day in and day out. She obviously was a very big contributor to this year’s success.”

The Mountlake Terrace girls cross country squad placed second at the 3A State Cross Country Championships last month.

A number of local businesses now have the December Athlete Highlights poster on display. The monthly publication, now in its third year, provides MTHS coaches the opportunity to recognize student athletes for their contributions to the various sports programs at the high school.
