Middle school students from throughout the Edmonds School District participated in the Western Washington Technology Student Association (WTSA) Regional Competition held Jan. 11 at Brier Terrace Middle School; two student teams from BTMS finished in first and second places at the event.

The team of Daniel Orsborn and Antony Tran grabbed first place in the structural engineering challenge by building a structure out of 20 feet of balsa wood that supported 161 pounds of weight. Placing second in the competition was the BTMS team of Themba Kimani and Reese Newhouse; Brad Knorr and Daniel Nguyen, from Alderwood Middle School, finished in third place.

A total of 54 students from Brier Terrace, Alderwood, College Place and Meadowdale Middle Schools took part in various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competitions at the event. Last Saturday’s regional competition helped prepare students for the upcoming WTSA State Conference, scheduled to take place in March.
