After a scoreless first half, Mountlake Terrace found the goal twice in the second 40 minutes of play and defeated visiting Mariner 2-0 to kickoff the 2015 prep girls soccer season on Tuesday.

It was the second straight year that the Hawks opened the year with a win over the Marauders; Mountlake Terrace beat Mariner 8-1 on the first day of play in 2014.

While the victory gets the Hawks’ season off on a good foot, before the match coach Evan Hatch hinted that he wouldn’t necessarily be putting a big emphasis on wins and losses this season. “This year, my goal for the team is to increase the consistency of our play, both psychologically and technically,” he said. “I’d like to see our team play hard and play well throughout the entire season and into the playoffs. The team’s focus this year is much more about consistent performance than about wins and losses.”

In other Mountlake Terrace action on Tuesday, the boys tennis team flexed its muscles and pounded the Marysville-Getchell Chargers 5-2 in the season opener for both squads.

All fours Mountlake Terrace singles players defeated their Charger opponents in straight sets with the Hawks’ No. 1 and No. 2 singles’ players, Jeremy Ansdell and Adam Lorraine, each winning their matches 6-0, 6-0.
