High school basketball fans will be celebrating the holidays this weekend as the 16th Annual Mountlake Terrace High School Holiday Tournament brings together eight teams for two days of hoops starting Friday. Varsity, junior varsity and C (freshman) teams will all see action, with games scheduled at two gyms: Mountlake Terrace High School and Brier-Terrace Middle School.

Varsity games begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the MTHS Terracium with a matchup of Ferndale (4-5) against Marysville-Pilchuck (0-9). Host and seventh-ranked Mountlake Terrace (6-2) plays Snohomish (3-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

In other varsity action on Friday, undefeated Arlington (8-0) faces Kelso (5-4) at 3 p.m., while Mark Morris (5-2) will take on Foster (5-4) at 5 p.m. Mark Morris is one of the state’s top-ranked 2A schools, whose only losses so far this year have been to Oregon’s top-ranked 6A school, Lake Oswego, and Oregon’s eighth-ranked 5A school Sandy.

Tournament play begins at 10 a.m. Friday with junior varsity games at Mountlake Terrace High School and C teams at Brier-Terrace. Saturday games will also begin at 10 a.m.

The Mountlake Terrace Hawks are coming off a defeat to Glacier Peak on Dec. 21 and will be looking to get back to their winning ways during the tournament. The team will use the winter break competition “to work on getting better,” coach Nalid Sood said after the Glacier Peak loss.

Spectator admission to the tournament is $5 per day for adults and students without a valid ASB card, $3 for students with ASB card and $2 for senior citizens and elementary school-age students. The Hawks’ varsity games will be broadcast on the Hawks Lives Sports Network.
