The spring sports teams of Mountlake Terrace High School found themselves in close battles on Wednesday, coming away with mixed results. The baseball and softball squads both lost one-run games in the final inning, the girls tennis team grabbed a one-point victory, and the boys and girls track teams finished middle-of-the-pack.

In a game that started on Tuesday, the Hawks baseball squad gave up an unearned run in the top of the seventh to fall 2-1 to the Lynnwood Royals. Freshman Jared Whitman scored for the Royals off a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brady Girgus. Whitman had reached base after being hit in the helmet by Hawk pitcher Ben Reijonen, then took second base on a throwing error and reached third on a bunt.

The game had been suspended in the second inning due to rain on Tuesday, then picked up where it had left off Wednesday afternoon at Mountlake Terrace High School.

The MTHS softball team suffered a similar defeat on Wednesday when the visiting Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks pushed across a run in extra innings and grabbed a 3-2 victory.

Terrace had a 2-0 lead early off a Maddy Kristjanson first-inning home run and an Ashley Fitzgerald RBI triple in the second inning, but couldn’t muster any more runs off Tomahawk winning pitcher Jordan Willard. After a scoreless eighth inning, Marysville-Pilchuck scored what turned out to be the winning run in the second extra frame when, with two outs, Sarrah Flynn rifled a single over the head of Kristjanson into left field, scoring teammate Karly Albertson.

In girls tennis action against Everett, Terrace’s Nicki Bouche, Tina Liu and Madison Haney all picked up singles’ victories. The doubles’ team of Aysha Raza and Brittany Kinsella snuck by the Everett pair of Juhliette Gentzler and Mirka Mandich to give the Hawks enough points for the team victory.
