Starting pitcher Daniel Theis struck out seven in a complete game victory as the Mountlake Terrace Hawks won their second straight game over Meadowdale 2-1 Wednesday. The Mavs’ Moises Valadez also pitched a complete game in a losing effort, with one of the two runs he gave up unearned.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when, with Ben Reijonen on third, Elliott Nebel stole second. Catcher Alex Thompson tried to gun him down, but the throw went into centerfield and Reijonen scored on the error. Wyatt Allemann started the 4th with a single and then Keegan Otter, pinch-running for Allemann, got to second on a wild pitch.Theis drove him home on an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Mavs scored one in the bottom of the 7th and Dakota Barlament came up with runners on second and third and two outs. Barlament hit a sharp ground ball up the middle that Theis blocked and threw him out to end the game.

The game started when Drew Serres drew a walk and got to third after a one-out sacrifice fly by Jason Shevenko. However, Valadez got cleanup hitter Allemann to strike out swinging to end the inning. Kenley Ackerman got a one-out single and Barlament followed him with a single of his own, putting runners at first and second. However, Justin Ridley and Parker Coffey hit long fly balls that did not clear the fence and were caught for the final two outs of the inning.

Mountlake Terrace got their first score in the 2nd. Reijonen got a two-out single and advanced to third on a single by Nebel, putting runners at the corners. Nebel went to steal second and when Thompson attempted to throw him out, Reijonen scored on an error; Nebel advanced to third. Nolan Takeya walked to continue the inning but was picked off for the third out. Alex Thompson earned a one-out single in the bottom of the 2nd and was pinch ran for by Phil Thomas. Thomas stole second to put the tying run in scoring position, but Garrett Walsh and Collin Costello struck out the end the inning.

Valadez got an easy one-two-three inning in the top of the 3rd, and so did Theis. Ackerman knocked a one-out single, but Barlament grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the bottom half of the inning. Alleman lead off the 4th with a single and Otter pinch ran for the catcher. Otter advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on a single by Theis to make it 2-0, Hawks. Theis was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double and Valadez retired Michael Hunt and Reijonen to end the top of the 4th. Jacob Hunnewell got a two-out single in the bottom of the 4th, but Thompson hit a hard ground ball straight back to the mound that Theis fielded and calmly threw him out.

Valadez struck out Takeya and Serres en route to a one-two-three top of the 5th. Theis struck out Brett Schaefer for the third time of the game to end the bottom of the 5th, also pitching a one-two-three inning. Valadez wasn’t going to be outdone and retired the 2-3-4 hitters in order in the top of the 6th. Meadowdale got a break in the bottom of the 6th. Ridley got a two-out single. Coffey hit a groundball to the thirdbaseman, Takeya, whose throw went high. Reijonen caught the toss but was pulled off the bag and tried to tag Coffey. Reijonen dropped the ball on the tag and Coffey was safe. Ridley advanced to third on the play. With runners on the corners and two outs, Hunnewell came up and hit a long fly to left field that was caught by Nebel for the final out of the 6th.

The Hawks tried to add another insurance run in the top of the 7th after Reijonen earned a two out walk. Nebel followed up with a single and Takeya had runners on first and second. He hit a fly ball into the gap in right-center field that was caught by a diving Barlament to end the threat. The Mavs finally broke through in the bottom of the 7th. After Thompson struck out and Walsh flew out, Costello got aboard by getting hit by a pitch. Schaefer managed to draw a walk after striking out the previous three at bats, and Ackerman smacked a single to left field that Costello scored on. Schaefer made it to third and, on the throw, Ackerman got to second. That put runners at second and third with two outs; the winning run on second, and the tying run on third. Barlament swung hard at the first pitch and hit a tough grounder at the mound that Theis knocked down with the butt of his glove. Theis then recovered the ball and threw Barlament out at first to end the game. The Hawks held on 2-1.

The Hawks improve to 6-8 (5-6 in conference) and the Mavs fall to 8-6 (6-5 in conference). The Hawks go for the sweep as the teams play the third game of the series Friday at Mountlake Terrace at 4 p.m.
