Another weekend tournament, another strong performance by the Mountlake High School wrestling team.
The Hawks placed fifth in the team competition at the Island Invitational on Saturday at Bainbridge Island High School. The squad was led by Taron Castleton and Syd Springberg, who had second-place finishes in the 132-lb. and 170-lb. weight classes, respectively.
Other Terrace notables included Banh Trung finishing third in the 106-lb. weight class, Tim Zuehl grabbing fourth in the 182-lb. class, Brett Potter finishing fourth in the 195-lb. class, Kaleb Davis also placing fourth in the 285-lb. class, and sixth-place finishes for Shawn Poole at 160, David Marrs at 182 and Jazz Borromeo at 220. Hawk Kevin Massey placed seventh in the 152-lb. class.
Castleton picked up two pinfall victories in the tournament before succumbing to Brian Burchett of Klahowya in the finals. Likewise Springberg won twice by pinfall leading up to his finals match, a rematch from a week previous with Brian Cristion of Port Angeles. Springberg and Cristion met at the Bonney Lake Classic on Jan. 5, with Cristion emerging as the victor. At Saturday’s Island Invitation, the Port Angeles wrestler came out on top, winning the class title and forcing Springberg to settle for second place once again.
The runner-up finish by Springberg didn’t hurt his state rankings; the Hawk junior is ranked fifth in the state in the 170-lb. class by Washingtonwrestlingreport.net.
Terrace hosts its final dual meet of the season on Thursday, Jan. 17, against Meadowdale at 7 p.m. at Mountlake Terrace High School. Thursday’s meet will also include a ceremony for the seniors on the team, along with their parents.
