Terrace Park Student Hit in Crosswalk

The Herald reports that a Terrace Park Elementary student was hit in a crosswalk on Monday morning:

A Terrace Park Elementary School student is expected back in the classroom soon after being struck by a car Monday morning, officials said. The sixth-grade student was walking to school and used a crosswalk at 224th Street and 56th Avenue when she was hit, school officials said in a letter to parents. The crosswalk was up the road from another crosswalk that has crossing guards, said D.J. Jakala, an Edmonds School District spokeswoman.

The girl was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She was reported to have a broken shoulder but will be returning to school soon, Jakala said. The driver likely will be ticketed for failing to yield, Mountlake Terrace police Sgt. Doug Hansen said. The driver told officers she took full responsibility for the accident and said she didn’t see the girl. Hansen asked drivers to slow down when driving around schools.

Bad weather and fewer daylight hours can make it hard to see, he said.

“We all have to use a little bit more caution,” he said.
