With a new enthusiasm for competition, the Mountlake Terrace girls basketball team came out running and never looked back, defeating the Kingston Buccaneers 52-34 and capturing third place at the King’s Christmas Tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks pressured the Buccaneers from the opening tipoff. “We put in a new press for the tournament and it worked good, but it’s very tiring,” said Nikkie Froehlich. While the team fatigued late in Friday’s game against Enumclaw, Mountlake Terrace (3-8) was able to sustain their effort through four quarters against Kingston (2-2) and come away with the win.

Samantha Romanowski favors the new attacking Hawk team; “We get a lot of steals,” she said.

Froehlich led a balanced scoring attack for the Hawks with 13 points; Maddie Kristjanson added 12 points, while Romanowski dropped in 10. Kingston was led by the 12 points of Katelyn Carper; Savannah Turrieta added 11 points.

Mountlake Terrace returns to Wesco action on Friday, Jan. 4, when they travel to Oak Harbor to play the Wildcats at 7:15 p.m.
