After having what they felt was a win stolen from them last Friday, the Mountlake Terrace girls basketball team got a feel-good victory Wednesday night as they defeated the Marysville-Getchell Chargers 58-17 at Mountlake Terrace High School.
Terrace blitzed the Chargers with a 16-0 run to start the game and never looked back. All eight Hawks played and scored, with Maddie Kristjanson leading all scorers with 16 points.
Coach David Brophy said his team needed an emotional boost after a 48-44 lost to Oak Harbor last Friday, a game that Terrace led after three quarters 38-28.
“Friday was a disappointing game up at Oak Harbor,” Brophy said. “They shot 26 free throws, we shot six; we had four girls foul out and ended up with four (playing). We didn’t come away with a very good feeling, so this helped us.”
“Hopefully this will put us in the right direction for Stanwood on Friday,” Brophy added.
Wednesday’s win was the first Wesco victory for the Hawks this season, lifting their league record to 1-5, 4-9 overall. The team still sits in fifth place in the Wesco 3A South division, a position they will have to move up from to qualify for the postseason. “The goal is to make the district tournament,” Brophy said. “We need to beat some of those teams that nudged us the first time around.”
Marysville-Gretchell fell to 0-6 in Wesco play, 2-11 overall.
On Friday the Hawks face a tough 10-2 Stanwood squad that features a tall backline and strong outside shooters. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m. at Mountlake Terrace High School.
