Megan, who has been out of school since she was diagnosed, played second base on the E-W junior varsity softball team last year as a freshman. Megan’s mom, Marie Brookins, said that this year, the girls on the JV team are wearing Megan’s number — 14 — on their helmets. The family also suffered another medical challenge in late March when Megan’s father, Jeff, suffered a heart attack. “He’s doing okay, but he’s on short-term disability and is scheduled for cardio rehab to get him ready to go back to work,” Marie Brookins said.
“We’ve been hit a bit hard, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground and laughing as much as possible,” Marie said. “We are surrounded by a wonderful network of friends and family and I’m so amazingly grateful for that.”
