The WIAA 2A, 3A, 4A Track & Field State Championships is a three-day affair, much to the delight of the Mountlake Terrace High School track team as Day 1 of the meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma proved to be somewhat of a disappointment for the Hawks. Terrace had only two participants in event finals on Thursday, and each didn’t get the result they would have wanted.
Hawk Jack Pearce finished 18th in the 3A boys 1600 meter run with time of 4:40.16, well behind the winner of the event, Joe Hardy of Seattle Prep at 4:07.73. For Terrace’s Katherine Gustafson, a time of 5:11.54 was only good for 10th place in the 3A girls 1600 meter run, an event won by Megan Beauchene of Kamiakin with a time of 4:48.42.
Both Pierce and Gustafson had their sights set higher at state after posting faster times in 1600 meter runs at the 3A NW District 1 meet a week earlier.
The one bright spot for MTHS during Day 1 of the state meet was junior McKenna Hunt, who placed second in a preliminary heat of the 3A Girls 100 meter hurdles event. Hunt’s time of 15.67 was fourth best among all 3A girls on Thursday and qualifies her for the event finals to be run on Friday.
Hunt, and a number her Terrace teammates, will be in action during day two of the state meet. In addition to the 100 meter hurdles finals, Hunt will run in a preliminary heat of the 300 meter hurdles. Other Hawks competing on Friday include Hailee Malins in the discus, Jessica Ong in the 800 meters, Michale Liddell in the long jump, Brett Potter in the discus, and Chinne Okoronkwo in the long jump. Barbara Biney will have the busiest day of all the Terrace track team members as the senior will be in the finals of the long jump and preliminary heats of the 100 meters and the 200 meters on Friday.
