The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) finished up its state golf championship tournaments on Thursday, with three golfers from Mountlake Terrace and Cedar Park Christian School — Mountlake Terrace (CPCS-MLT) part of the competitions.
After a strong first day at the 1B/2B WIAA Boys Golf Championships, Ben Reidy of CPCS-MLT found the going a little tougher during the second round at Oakbrook Golf Course in Lakewood. Reidy, who had been tied for third place just two shots off the pace after the first 18 holes on Wednesday, shot an 89 on Thursday and finished tied for eighth.
Sawyer Spackman of St. George’s High School of Spokane shot a 78 and came from five stokes at the start of the day to claim the 1B/2B individual championship. Teammate Jimmy Psomas finished fourth in the tournament and helped St. George’s win the team state title.
In 1B/2B girls state competition at Oakbrook, CPCS’s Hannah Campbell proved to be one of the most consistent golfers at state. Campbell followed up her 107 on Wednesday with a 106 on Thursday and placed 13th overall in the girls state championship. Emily Baumgart of DeSales High School won the individual title with a two-day combined score of 144, more than 40 strokes better than the second place finisher.
St. George’s, in addition to winning the boys team title, also took home the girls state championship trophy.
In the 3A Boys Golf Championships, Mountlake Terrace High School’s Matt Jenson followed up his 80 on Wednesday at Tri Mountlake Golf Course in Ridgefield with an 81 on Thursday. Jenson finished 38th in the individual competition.
Spencer Tibbits of Fort Vancouver held on to his first round lead and won the 3A boys individual title with a two-day score of 140, one stroke better than Frank Garber of Juanita High School. Interlake High School won the 3A boys team competition.
