With two match wins on Friday, Mountlake Terrace High School’s doubles pairing of Allison Lorraine and Tina Liu have advanced to the semifinals of the WIAA 3A Girls Tennis Championships being held in Kennewick. Lorraine and Liu are two wins away from a being named 3A Girls Doubles Champions.
Terrace’s entry into the 3A girls singles’ competition, Nicki Bouche, didn’t fare as well.
Lorraine and Liu defeated the pairing of Sierra Silva and Victoria Boishakova of Auburn Mountainview High School in their first match of the day 6-4, 6-3. The Hawk pair then slipped by the pair of Megan Bastian and Rachael DeCaires of Eastside Catholic in the match-of-the-day, a three-set marathon decided by a tie-breaker; Lorraine and Liu won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Lorraine and Liu are scheduled to meet Caroline Dillion and Caroline Hamilton of Mercer Island High School Saturday, 8:30 a.m., at Kamiakin High School. The winner of that match will move on to the 3A girls doubles finals scheduled for noon at the Tri-City Court Club.
Liu has some history with the Mercer Island pair of Dillion and Hamilton. At last year’s state tourney, Dillion and Hamilton faced off with Liu and then-doubles partner Bouche in the 5th/8th place match. Dillion and Hamilton earned a come-from-behind victory 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in that one; Liu is hoping for a different outcome over the Mercer Island pair this year.
Bouche was defeated in her two singles matches on Friday and was eliminated from the tournament. The Hawk junior lost her first match 6-0, 6-1 to Cello Lockwood of Holy Names Academy, then fell to Stephanie Buckingham of Kennewick High School 6-2, 6-3.
