An Edmonds Community College student will be recognized at a ceremony in March for his scholastic achievements and community service.
Soohwan Jung is one of the state’s 66 top scholars from 34 Washington community and technical colleges. He is being recognized as a member of the All-Washington Academic Team.
Each college may nominate up to two students for the honor.
“I’m thankful for being selected to be part of the team,” Jung said. “It means a great deal to represent Edmonds Community College.”
Jung is a 22-year-old student from Korea pursuing a transfer degree with an emphasis in mathematics. He has a 4.0 GPA and serves on the student government board as the executive officer for academics. He also works as a supplemental instructor in a math class.
“It is important to become part of the community,” Jung said. “I encourage all students to take the opportunity to get involved. It has taught me leadership skills and confidence.”
Outside of class, Jung teaches Korean to other students. He also enjoys spending time with friends and travelling.
Jung plans to transfer to a four-year university next fall and get his Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He ultimately plans to get a Ph.D. in the field and to become a math instructor.
Members of the All-Washington Academic Team will receive a $250 scholarship from KeyBank of Washington. The top-ranked member will be named the state’s New Century Scholar and receive a $2,000 scholarship.
The ceremony will be on March 24 at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia. Gov. Jay Inslee will be the keynote speaker.
