The Mountlake Terrace High School softball team jumped out to a fast start in 3A District 1 tournament play Tuesday as the Hawks scored six runs against the No.1 North seed Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in the first inning of their first game. Terrace went on to win the match-up 11-5 before dropping its second game of the tourney 3-1 to the Ferndale Golden Eagles.
The 3A District 1 Softball Championship tournament is being played this week at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett, with three berths to the state tourney up for bid.
While Ferndale and Glacier Peak have guaranteed their spots in the WIAA 3A State Softball Championships next week, Terrace is one of four remaining District 1 teams that will be fighting it out for the final state berth on Thursday. The Hawks will face Everett in a loser-out game at Phil Johnson Fields at 4 p.m.; with a victory Terrace would face the winner of the Meadowdale —Stanwood game later Thursday night for a spot at the state championships.

The Hawks put themselves in a position to compete for state with a solid win over the Wesco League North Conference’s best regular season squad, the Tomahawks. Terrace batted around in the first inning, then added a single run in the second to build a 7-0 lead. Strong pitching by Gabby Calhoun and steady defense then kept the hard-hitting Marysville-Pilchuck squad at bay and secured the win for MTHS.
In their second game, the Hawks ran into a powerful Golden Eagles’ squad that has lost only one game all year. Ferndale’s Lauren Maley struck out 12 Hawks to pick up the win; Terrace could only muster two hits against the Golden Eagle’s starter.
Ferndale will play Glacier Peak for the 3A District 1 championship Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
