Softball: Hawks end regular season with loss to Mavs; start District play Tuesday

MTHSHawks logoThe Mountlake Terrace High School closed out their 2014 regular season on a disappointing note Thursday, losing 14-1 to Wesco 3A South Conference leader Meadowdale 14-1 in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Both teams are headed to the 3A District 1 Softball Tournament next week, to be held at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett. The Mavericks, who were undefeated in Wesco League play this season, claimed the No. 1 South seed and open the tourney against Marysville-Getchell. The Hawks enter the tournament as the No. 4 South seed and must face No. 1 North seed Marysville-Pilchuck, a team they have lost to twice this season by identical scores of 3-2.

All first-round district tournament games take place simultaneously on Tuesday, May 20, starting at 4 p.m. Second-round games in the double-elimination tourney are scheduled to follow 15 minutes following the completion of the 4 p.m. games.

In the Thursday regular season finale, Meadowdale jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings of play and never looked back. The Hawks could only muster three hits — all singles — in the match-up.

The Hawks closed out their regular season with a three-game losing streak and being outscored in those games 29-5. In order to match last year’s feat of qualifying for the WIAA 3A State Softball Championships, the squad will have to turn around their fortunes quickly; a pair of losses on Tuesday would end their 2014 season.

One win would return them for more district play on Thursday, while a pair of wins on Tuesday would punch their ticket to state.
