After crushing Granite Falls 8-0 on Monday, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks lost to the Lynnwood Royals 7-5 in a non-conference game at Mountlake Terrace High School Tuesday.
Freshman Kira Doan, getting her first start on the mound for the Hawks, gave up seven runs in the first four innings of Tuesday’s game. Desiree Graham led the Royals offense, going 2-5 with a double and a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Erica Gott went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Madison Morgan went 3-4 for Lynnwood (1-0).
Hawk Hannah Wilcox picked up two of the Terrace six hits with a double and an RBI.
With the Royals leading 3-1 in the 3rd, Hawks sophomore Ashley Fitzgerald hit a pop fly to right center, scoring Wilcox to make it 4-2. Wilcox then hit a pop fly double, putting senior Maddy Kristjanson on third base. Kristjanson would then score the tying run, 4-4.
The Royals came back in the 4th with a ground rule double and then a double homer to make it 7-4.
The Hawks would fight back and score in the bottom of the 7th, making it 7-5, only to lose on a controversial double-play.
“I think we played good today,” Kristjanson said. “It’s always tough to lose, especially against a good team like Lynnwood, who is a competitive team like we are. It’s a non-conference game, so in the end I guess you could say it doesn’t hurt us.”
“Today we kept battling right there with them,” Kristjanson added. “Our pitching has been solid to start the season out; I’m excited and proud of our underclassmen for stepping up and pitching for us.”
