So far, all city races uncontested as election filing period draws to close Friday

By Doug Petrowski

The filing period for candidates wishing to run for local political office this fall closes on Friday, and unless there’s a last-day rush of filings the nine city offices that are up for election in Brier and Mountlake Terrace will be uncontested runs for the nine incumbents.

In City of Brier races, current Mayor Bob Colinas has filed for re-election; no one has signed up to oppose him as of Thursday. In the four council positions, incumbents Marc Olson, Martin Krienke, Michael Gallagher and John Joplin have all filed and have no opponents as-of-yet.

In Mountlake Terrace, five council positions will be on the fall ballot, with all five incumbents attempting to retain their seats. Kyoko Matsumoto Wright has filed to run again for Position 4, as has Rick Ryan in Position 1, Jerry Smith in Position 2, Doug McCardle for Position 3 and Bryan Wahl for Position 5.

In other offices, Ann McMurray of Brier has filed to run again for the Edmonds School District Board. McMurray has served on the board since 2005. As of Thursday she is running unopposed for her District 2 post.

Mountlake Terrace resident Robert Reedy has filed to run for the District 4 seat on the Snohomish County Council, a position currently held by Terrace resident Dave Gossett. The only other candidate to file for the District #4 post as-of-Thursday is Terry Ryan of Mill Creek.

Potential candidates have until 4 p.m. on Friday to file online for the opportunity to run for office and until 5 p.m. on Friday to file in person at the Snohomish County Auditor’s office in Everett.

  1. So none of the folks with strong opinions on the performance of the Mountlake Terrace City Council are willing to run for office?

  2. Probably because it’s much easier to criticize from the sidelines than to actually make the effort to be part of the solution, which requires mutual respect for others and a willingness to cooperate.

  3. Having a strong opinion and getting it heard by council aren’t the same. I don’t know Eiya, but Vince certainly knows how hard many of us worked to persuade the council to not transform downtown so dramatically. He also knows how those efforts and 1,324 signatures in support of them came to naught. That city council, much like this one, reached a predetermined “solution which public input to the contrary could not change.

Going to council meetings is generally a waste of time. If you’re not parroting the party line, no one listens. Running for office before, like many have, and actively participating in ballot measure politics is not the “sidelines.” Maybe folks supporting whatever the fourth iteration will be should look in the mirror for a glimpse of respect and cooperation because its a two-way street.

  4. This is not much of a news story. Waiting until the last day to file allows potential candidates to see who else is running and to decide which incumbent to run against. With the current groupthink on the City Council, it makes little sense for challengers to file against the same incumbent. As of 1pm, I note that challengers have filed for two of the five seats available. Let’s see what the next three hours brings.

  6. I agree with Vince above. It is surprising that not more of those that REALLY have a strong opinion didn’t step up to the plate. But a few actually did. Welcome to election season!

  7. Competition in the marketplace of ideas makes a democracy, and I applaud anyone who is willing to put themselves forward. Bravo Len and Stephen!
