More than 320 homes are safer thanks to a grant-funded program that provided free smoke alarms and safety surveys in the Snohomish County Fire District 1 service area.
The smoke-alarm program was funded by a Vision 20/20 Grant awarded through the federal Assistance to Firefighter Grant program. The grant provided resources for Fire District 1 to perform home safety surveys and install free smoke alarms.
“We anticipated installing about 550 alarms, but the response from the community was overwhelming. Our smoke alarm technicians, Brendan Magee and Steve Snyder, ended up installing 1,220 smoke alarms and replacing almost 100 batteries in existing alarms as they conducted home safety surveys in 320 homes in a four-month period,” said Fire Chief Ed Widdis.
Magee and Snyder were recently honored by the Fire District 1 Board of Commissioners. The free home safety assessments they provided included a brief survey, testing and installation of smoke alarms, identifying potential fire hazards, education on how to prevent a fire and assistance in creating a home fire escape plan.
Even though the grant program has ended and free smoke alarms are no longer available, Fire District 1 continues to offer installation assistance and safety checks for residents within its service area including the communities of unincorporated south Snohomish County, Brier, Edmonds Mountlake Terrace and Woodway.
