Smith and Sonmore Re-appointed Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem

Though it is we, the residents of Mountlake Terrace, who vote to elect our seven council members, it is the council members who vote to appoint the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem of Mountlake Terrace. Every two years the council votes to appoint council members to these two positions. A vote was held at Monday nights meeting to fill the two positions. For those of you who don’t know what these roles are: the Mayor presides at meetings and attends ceremonial events on behalf of the city. Each year, the Council elects a Mayor Pro Tem who serves in the same capacity in the Mayor’s absence.

The two nominations for Mayor were the current Mayor, Jerry Smith, and the current Mayor Pro Tem, Laura Sonmore. Michelle Robles nominated Jerry Smith and John Zombrano nominated Laura Sonmore. If you were following us during the elections, it will be no surprise that John Zombrano nominated and voted for someone other than Jerry Smith to be mayor. It was Zambrano who ran against Smith for his council position even though Zombrano had two years remaining in his term.

Here’s what Zombrano said about Sonmore prior to his nomination:

I’d like to, in deference to the outgoing chair and the request that we not become a council of rubber stamp or endorse or tolerate entitlements, I’d like to endorse and recommend to the council a council member who has demonstrated experience, a senior member of council, follows highest qualifications for AWC, has represented the city at different events in a way that the city would be proud of. This council member has been in training for a while and now is the time for us to recognize all the hard work. I liked to nominate council woman Laura Sonmore

The council voted 6-1 for Jerry Smith to be Mayor for 2010-2011, who has been our mayor for the past 6 years.

There were two nomination for Mayor Pro Tem as well. Mayor Jerry Smith nominated current Mayor Pro Tem, Laura Sonmore, to continue filling the position and John Zombrano nominated Michelle Robles. Again, the council voted 6-1 to for Laura Sonmore to continue as Mayor Pro Tem. Sonmore has been Mayor Pro Tem for the past 4 years.

The council appointments as well as the fact that all council incumbents were re-elected in November solidify the fact that residents and council members are fairly happy with the direction the council is taking the city of Mountlake Terrace.
