Simply Haiti is the senior project of Mountlake Terrace High School student Alex Herbig. Two days before the January earthquake in Haiti, Alex launched his project. The project was to raise money for an organization running a feeding program and an orphanage in Haiti. Once the earthquake happened, the project took a double meaning. See our previous story on the Simply Haiti project for more details.
On February 6th, there was a Simply Haiti dinner at Mountlake Terrace High School where a common Haitian meal of rice and beans was served. Local restaurant chain Tacos Guaymos catered the rice and beans meal free of charge. The dinner raised over $14,000 and online donations to the project have brought the total to nearly $20,000. Alex said that “the response was amazing and the night ran flawlessly.”
You can still donate online at the Simply Haiti web site.
Okay, one thing I’ve been trying to understand, but have not found info on: Haiti was a disaster area after the earthquake. I looked it up on a map and it’s on the same island as the Dominican Republic.
So, nothing happened in the Dominican Republic? Why wasn’t this dichotomy explained anywhere, or was it just not discussed enough to result in any Google searches?
I’m sure the earthquake didn’t just hit half the island? I’m sure it’s not just geography – one side is all stable rock and flat and the other is hillsides and mud.
