State Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe is calling for a study for ways to improve the I-405 express toll lanes.

McAuliffe, who represents Washington’s 1st District which includes Mountlake Terrace and Brier, introduced legislation on Thursday that would require the Joint Transportation Committee to examine ways to fix problems with the lanes.

“I’ve heard from thousands of my constituents who have voiced their frustration about the pricing, congestion, and varied inefficiencies of the toll lanes on I-405,” McAuliffe said. “As a frequent commuter of I-405, I understand these frustrations as well.”

The bill, SB6675, outlines issues to be examined, such as reducing occupancy for carpool access and whether eliminating the double white line would allow easier access to the lanes. The study would also include a survey to identify who is using the lanes, where they are travelling, their socioeconomic status and their mode of transportation.

“It is important that we learn more about the people who are utilizing the toll lanes,” McAuliffe said. “I am concerned that the people the tolls lanes are hurting the most are those who cannot afford to pay.
