The postseasons for Mountlake Terrace High School baseball and softball teams came to an end Saturday as the boys lost their first-round WIAA 3A State Baseball Tournament game to Columbia River (Vancouver) 5-4 and the girls fell in 3A District Softball Tournament play to Meadowdale, 4-3.
Both MTHS teams lost their final game in the last inning.
The boys found themselves in a tight game with the Chieftains of Columbia River, scoring a single run in the first inning, only to fall behind 2-1 after two. The Hawks scored three in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead, but fell apart in the last inning. With two outs and needing just one more strike to end the game, instead Terrace gave up a game-tying RBI triple and then an RBI single that put Columbia River ahead for good.
Columbia River collected half of their total hits for the game in that final inning.
The girls were also involved in a nail-biter. Meadowdale took an early 3-0 lead, but the Hawks scored one in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to tie the game. The Mavericks pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off victory.
The Meadowdale softball team went on to beat Sedro-Woolley in a later game on Saturday to earn a spot in the 3A State Tournament.
The baseball squad ends its season with a record of 14-9 and the crown of District 1 Champions. The softball team finished with a record of 15-9.
