Scene nearby: Annual Turkey Trot 5k draws record crowd, food bank donations

A record number of community members kicked off their Thanksgiving festivities Thursday morning by participating in the Turkey Trot 5k to support the Lynnwood Food Bank.

The sixth annual event held at Edmonds Community College drew 199 participants who ran,  jogged or walked around the Lynnwood Municipal Golf Course. Community members of all ages turned out to raise $4,800 for the food bank, which will receive $4,000 after expenses are covered. Organizer Matt Appel said the event raised almost twice as much as last year.

Additionally, the event received 291 lbs. of donated food — more than double what was donated during the 2018 Turkey Trot.

Earlier this week, the food bank provided Thanksgiving meals to 449 Lynnwood households — a total of 1,380 individuals. Each received a turkey or chicken (customer choice), fresh potatoes, sweet potatoes and onions, fresh carrots and green beans, boxed stuffing, walnuts, canned pumpkin, fresh apples, walnuts, and miscellaneous items (cranberry, flour, butter, etc.).
