About 35 people attended the grand reopening and ribbon cutting for the newly expanded Firefighters Memorial Park, 3900-228th Street Southwest, on Saturday.

Visitors witnessed first-hand the progress made after the demolition of the old Fire Station 18 that was built in 1964. They also heard about upcoming park improvements scheduled for later this summer and about the history of the park.

Firefighter Memorial Park was originally named “Larry Egbert Park” after a Mountlake Terrace Firefighter who was killed in a car crash in the early 1970s. The park’s name was changed in the mid-1980s to honor all firefighters after a request from the Mountlake Terrace Fire Department with the blessing of the Egbert Family.

Members of the City Council, Recreation and Parks Advisory Commission (RPAC) and Neighborhood Parks Improvement Subcommittee (NPIS) and Snohomish County Fire District 1 were on hand at the event. Eagle Scouts Mike Green, who renovated and relocated the “Fire Truck” play equipment, Theron Samp, who installed the Kiosk Reader Board and Ray Baldwin, who is updating and installing the Firefighters Memorial this summer were recognized for helping improve the overall appearance and usability of the park.
