The Mountlake Terrace City Council will hear a presentation on Town Center parking by a University of Washington student team at its Tuesday, Jan. 22 council meeting. The report will provide information about current vehicle parking demand in the downtown core, information that will be used to help determine if there is a need to consider any changes in parking requirements.

A team of three UW students — Matt Brophy, Allison Hamburg and Chris Bunge — worked with the city on the project as part of a class assignment for their urban planning program. The students examined parking availability and utilization in Mountlake Terrace’s Town Center and conducted a comprehensive inventory of the existing use at various times and days. They also inventoried other similar cities to compare parking requirements. The students will provide more details about the project results and recommendations during their presentation.

City officials see the Mountlake Terrace Town Center as a prime area for greater economic vitality. Providing a reasonable amount of on-street parking downtown to support business is one way the city hopes to promote Town Center economic growth. Officials concur that on-street parking will supplement the on-site vehicle parking spaces provided as development occurs downtown.
The city council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Mountlake Terrace Interim City Hall Council Chambers, 6100-219th St. S.W., Suite 220.
