The Mountlake Terrace Hawks opened their 2016-2017 wrestling season Thursday with a 48-25 loss to the visiting Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in a non-conference match at Mountlake Terrace High School.
Five Hawks earned victories in their individual matches, but it wasn’t enough to overcome two forfeits and the seven match wins compiled by M-P.
“I’m not upset,” Mountlake Terrace Hawk Coach Grant Thompson said after the match. “It’s the first dual of the year. The first dual is always kind of odd because you’ve got a nervous excitement and you’re testing the waters. It definitely wasn’t a shellacking, but we can do better.”
Terrace’s Andre Seabrook, Reyne Mack and Michael Phu all picked up pin-fall wins in their weight classes. Michael Marquez and Pavel Oliferovskiy also earned victories in their matches on Thursday.
Thompson was happy with the individual wins, but also praised the efforts of many of his wrestlers that loss their matches. “I’m proud of our young guys coming up, like Pedro (Hernandez) for example,” he said. “Pedro loss a three-point match. Pedro, it was his first year wrestling last year. I thought he fought really hard (tonight).”
“I thought Moussa (Traore) fought really hard,” Thompson continued. “I thought he could have won (his) match.”
The Hawks return to match action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when they travel to south Tacoma’s Washington High School for the multi-team Patriot Dome Classic.
In other Terrace results from Thursday, the Hawk girls basketball team evened their early season record at 1-1 with a 51-49 win over the Squalicum Storm in Bellingham.
Terrace was led in scoring by the 14 points of senior Jorie Lambert and the 12 points of junior Jazz Zenk.
The Hawks return home on Saturday, Dec. 3, for a 5 p.m. non-conference clash against the Lynnwood Royals, part of a full day of prep basketball games at Mountlake Terrace High School. The boys and girls varsity, junior varsity and ‘C’ teams from Terrace and Lynnwood will match up for games beginning at 1 p.m.
