After winning four of their previous six matches, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks entered the District 1/2 2A Volleyball Tournament with some momentum. But that push ran into a pair of Sedro-Woolley Cubs that would not be bowled over on Tuesday.
Junior Claire Hindman and sophomore Jamie Bartok led the Cubs to a heartstopping 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13) victory over the Hawks in a district tournament first round loser-out match played at Mountlake Terrace High School.
With the win, Sedro-Woolley will move into the double-elimination portion of the district tourney; with the loss, the Hawks will pack up their volleyballs and nets as their 2019 season is over.
The matchup between the no.8-seed Hawks and the no.9-seed Cubs was tight throughout, lasting more than two hours and not decided until Hindman executed a final kill to end the fifth set 15-13, giving Sedro-Woolley the 3-2 victory.
Earlier in the evening it appeared as though the Cubs may sweep their way to a quick win; Sedro-Woolley captured the first two sets 25-21 and 25-18, then jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the third set. Terrace Coach Krissy Cain confessed her squad got out to a slow start.
“I don’t think they had a sense of urgency the first two sets that they did gain in the third and fourth,” she said.
After a timeout, the Hawks showed new life in that third set, tying the match at 13-13 on a Kaylee Wagner ace. The two teams were tied four more times in the third set (16-16, 17-17, 18-18 and 21-21) before Terrace pulled ahead for good to take the set 25-23.
The Hawks led throughout the fourth set on their way to a 25-20 set win, then led 10-7 in the final set before the Cubs outscored Terrace 8-3 in the final stretch to claim the set 15-13 and the match victory.
Hindman and Bartok combined for five kills in that final stretch to complete the comeback. The two Cub hitters each had 22 kills in the match, overpowering the Hawks.
Cain admitted that Hindman, a middle hitter, was especially troublesome for her squad. “She’s left-handed, so she kind of threw us for a loop,” Cain explained. “I don’t think anyone in our (Wesco) league is a left-hander in the middle … it took us a long while to figure out how to defend that or block that.”
With the loss, Terrace ends the 2019 campaign with a 4-12 record – an improvement from last year’s 0-15 mark. Cain had nothing but good things to say about the overall play of her squad this year, especially considering that the team started 0-9.
“I feel like they finally learned what they could accomplish,” Cain said. “They’ve always been a great team in my eyes; they just finally saw it for themselves.”
“They fought the entire time; it was awesome,” Cain added.
