After going winless in 2015, many expected the Mountlake Terrace Hawks volleyball team to show some improvement this year. And with five victories during the regular season, the Hawks have shown tremendous progress.
But Coach Rene Noeun’s squad has done something even more significant in 2016.
“The excited thing is we made it to the postseason,” said Noeun. “That’s definitely a big jump from last season. This year is different.”
The 2016 District 1/2 2A Volleyball Tournament begins on Tuesday, Nov. 1, and the Hawks will be a part of it. In fact, for the first time in 22 years, Terrace will host a postseason volleyball match.
The Hawks will take on the Sedro-Woolley Cubs on Tuesday at Mountlake Terrace High School in a first round loser-out tourney game; first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Noeun put her thoughts on playing host to a first-round volleyball playoff match simply: “It will be really nice,” she said.
Terrace earned the home date by being the no. 5 seed in the 12-team tourney and will welcome in a Cubs’ squad that just slipped into the postseason as the tournament’s no. 12 seed.
Sedro-Woolley finished the 2016 regular season with a 3-11 overall record.
If the Hawks can get past the Cubs on Tuesday they will enter the double-elimination portion of the tournament and will continue to play tourney matches on their home court as Mountlake Terrace High School had already been slated to host at least half of the later round district games.
The top three finishers at District 1/2 district tourney will qualify for the WIAA 2A State Volleyball Championships set for Nov. 11-12 at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.
