The Mountlake Terrace Hawks showed they will be a force to content with during the final month of the prep girls track and field season as they flexed their muscles and blew away the competition Saturday at the Terrace Invite.
The Hawks placed first in six individual events and captured the team title by more than 30 points over second place Juanita.
The boys from Mountlake Terrace couldn’t match the girls’ success, but did finish fifth among 12 teams that garnered points in the invitational meet staged at Edmonds Stadium.
Hawk junior Hailee Malins and sophomore Katherine Gustafson led the girls team charge by winning two events each. Malins placed first in the shot put with a toss of 37-02.00 and the discus with a mark of 113-00, both efforts her best of the season. Gustafson topped the field in both the 1,600 meter race and the 3,200, the latter in a season-best time of 11:21.33.
Also picking up individual event wins on Saturday for Terrace were senior McKenna Hunt in the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.98 and the 4 by 200 relay team of Taylor McCulloch, Julia Hart, Sophia Parsons and Isabel Kembel in a time of 1:48.44.
On the boys’ side, Hawk freshman Alex Woodard took first place in the high jump with his best mark of the year at 6-02.50.
The Terrace Invite drew teams from throughout the Puget Sound area and the track squad from Alberni High School in Port Alberni, British Columbia, located more than two hours north of Victoria.
