For a young team not expected to put the heat on too many other squads this year, the Mountlake Terrace boys tennis team is as hot as the recent weather.
The Hawks have won three of their first four matches in the 2014 season, including a 4-3 victory over Arlington in a match played under the scorching sun at Mountlake Terrace High School on Monday.
Terrace picked up wins by Jeremy Ansdell and Adam Lorraine in singles’ competition and the teams of Collin Rhodes/Drake Day and Caleb Sill/Max Leidig in doubles’ matches in their matchup with the Eagles.
For Hawks head coach Alberto Ramirez, the early season success has been a welcome surprise considering the squad’s young line-up and relative low turnout of players for the program. There are not enough boys to put together a junior varsity team at this point of the season — although Ramirez hopes to field one soon — and the top two singles’ spots on the roster are being held down by sophomores.
Ansdell has been the Hawks’ No. 1 singles’ player during the first four matches and has a 3-1 record in those outings; Lorraine is undefeated as the team’s No. 2 singles’ player.
As strong as the team has appeared in early season competition, they have a chance to get even better with the expected addition of a foreign exchange student from Germany. Senior Henry Brenen will join the squad soon, possibly as early as the team’s next match on Thursday, Sept. 18, and is expected to challenge Ansdell and Lorraine for the top singles’ spots on the squad, Ramirez said.
The Hawks had already notched wins over Marysville-Getchell and Woodinville prior to the victory over Arlington on Monday, and will face a winless Shorecrest Scots team on Thursday at Kellogg Middle School in Shoreline.
