Mountlake Terrace Hawk Jeremy Ansdell will play in the 5th/8th place match of the WIAA 3A State Boys Tennis Championships on Saturday, May 28, after going 2-1 in the first day of tourney competition Friday in Kennewick.
Other Edmonds School District competitors Tina Liu of Mountlake Terrace and the doubles team of Grayson Turley and Arun Kalohke of Edmonds-Woodway didn’t fare as well Friday and were knocked out of tournament play.
Ansdell will face Ranjan Sharangpani of Capital Saturday morning at theTri-City Court Club in Kennewick with the winner claiming fifth place in the state tourney. Ansdell earned the spot for a podium finish after defeating Zaylan Jacobsen of Sumner and Will Thompson on Hanford in loser-out matches on Friday.
Ansdell ended up on the consolation side of the boys singles bracket early Friday after dropping his opening match of the tournament to Bryan Thornquist of Auburn 6-0, 6-2.
Mountlake Terrace’s Liu was victorious in her first match of the 3A girls singles state tournament Friday morning, but subsequently fell in her next two outings to Jade Lancaster of Sumner and Alex Ferry of Garfield.
E-W Warriors Turley and Kalohke found the going tough Friday, losing to doubles teams from Garfield and Mercer Island in straight sets to end their run at the state tournament.
