Mountlake Terrace sophomore Annika Matthews picked up a 21st place finish and a 23rd place finish in the two events she competed in at the 2014 Girls State Swimming and Diving Championships Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
Matthews placed 21st in the 3A 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.62; she finished 23rd in the 100 backstoke in a time of 1:07.56.
This was the second year that Matthews qualified for the 3A state swim championships; Matthews competed in the 100 yard backstroke at the 2013 state meet as a freshman.
Matthews was the only state qualifier from Mountlake Terrace. Among other Edmonds School District qualifiers, Edmonds-Woodway placed eleventh in the team competition while Meadowdale finished 29th.
Lakeside won the 2014 3A team title with 333, easily outdistancing defending champion Mercer Island who placed second with 279.5. Bainbridge earned the final podium finish by placing third with 232 points.
