WIAA tennis logoThough not claiming any state title, the girls doubles teams from Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds-Woodway High Schools that were competing at the state prep championships this week did bring home impressive podium finishes.

The Hawk team of Nicki Bouche and Tina Liu had just one match on Saturday and were up for the challenge, easily defeating Miriam Cabrera and Lilly Le of Lincoln 6-3, 6-4 to capture fourth place in the 3A State Tournament in Kennewick.

The Warrior team of Myint-Zu Kyaw and Hanna Rehnfeldt survived some tough going on Saturday and grabbed third place. After picking up a pair of wins on Friday, Kyaw and Rehnfeldt succumbed to the eventual tournament champions Gabby and Lydia Venditti of Mercer Island 0-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Then Kyaw and Rehnfeldt won a close first set and held on to defeat Lina Larson and Jessica Liang of Interlake for the third place prize later in the day.

The championship match of the 3A Girls Doubles Tournament was an all-Mercer Island affair, with the Venditti sisters quickly downing Caroline Hamilton and Sammy Sweet 6-1, 6-1.
