Under perfect conditions for golf, low scores were posted early and often on Wednesday at the 3A State Boys Golf Tournament in Kennewick, with a couple Edmonds School District golfers getting in on the act and qualifying for Round 2 play on Thursday, May 28.
Trevor Frisby of Meadowdale scored a five-over-par 77 on the Canyon Lakes Golf Course layout, placing him in a tie for 17th after first round play; Frisby tees off in the second and final round Thursday at 8:51 a.m.
With a 10-over-par 82, Edmonds-Woodway’s Drew Gradwohl just survived the cut and will also see second round action on Thursday, teeing off in the first pairing of the day at 7:30 a.m.
Jack Stutz and Sam Dimmock of Meadowdale, and Mike Jenson of Mountlake Terrace weren’t able to make the field for Round 2 play; Stutz scored a 88, Dimmock a 94 and Jenson a 93 in Round 1 of the state tournament.
Daytime temperatures were in the 70s in Kennewick on Wednesday with little if any wind for the golfers to content with. Weather conditions are expected to remain the same for Thursday’s Round 2 action at Canyon Lakes.
Austin Brown of Southridge and Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge are tied at the halfway point of the tourney as each shot a three-under-par 69 on Wednesday.
In the 3A State Girls Golf Tournament, Meadowdale’s Morgan Rood stands in 10th place after shooting an 85 at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland. She will be the only Edmonds School District golfer to play in Round 2 as Ana Maria Beall of Meadowdale and Frances Monahan, Carson Harvey, Kathryn Schalk and Kennedy Mitchell, all of Edmonds-Woodway, failed to make the cut.
Beall was named one of the WIAA’s Athletes of the Week for last week. Beall shot a two-day score of 181 to win the District 1 championship at Kayak Point Golf Course. She won by four strokes.
