After finishing their non-league slate of matches with a record of 2-1, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks volleyball team entered league play with confidence and high expectations. But on Tuesday, the Hawks learned just how tough matches in the Wesco League will be this season.
Terrace was swept in their 2A/3A Wesco League opener 3-0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-13) by the Snohomish Panthers Tuesday night at Snohomish High School.
The Panthers dominated front line play as their trio of 6-footers — Maggie Thunselle, Roz Gillie and Grace Raper — combined for 26 kills in the match.
Snohomish finished the first set on a 20-8 run and a 25-13 win, but Terrace showed some fight in the second set, jumping out to a 7-0 lead off the serving of junior Sophie Parsons. The Hawks then led late 23-18, but couldn’t close out the set as the Panthers came back, grabbing a 24-23 lead after two service aces by sophomore Bethany McBrien and then capturing the set 27-25 off a kill by junior Isabelle Strehle.
The Hawks were never able to recover after their tough second set stumble. Terrace trailed by as many as 13 points in the final set before losing 25-13.
Hawk Gabby Calhoun led the team in digs with 15; Sophie Parsons collected 14 assists for Terrace.
League play won’t get any easier for the Hawks this week as one of the expected 3A Wesco League contenders, the Arlington Eagles, come to Mountlake Terrace High School on Thursday, Sept. 22, for a 7 p.m. matchup.
Also on Tuesday, the Hawk girls soccer team suffered a 4-3 defeat to the Shorewood T-Birds and fell to 1-2-0 in 2A/3A Wesco League play, 5-2 overall.
