Wesco League postseason play was in full effect on Wednesday as action took place in girls tennis, girls golf, and boys and girls track.
For a third time this season Mountlake Terrace’s Tina Liu had a crack at doing something no one else has accomplish: beat freshman singles’ sensation Sasha Gaeth of Shorewood in a singles’ tennis match. And for a third time, Liu fell well short.
Gaeth easily defeated Liu 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match of the Wesco League 3A South Divisional Tournament Wednesday at Glacier Peak High School.
Liu had advanced to the title match after easy wins over Juliana Gholam of Ferndale 6-0, 6-0, and Michelle Baldini of Glacier Peak 6-3, 6-0 to set up a rematch with Gaeth. But like their two matches during the prep tennis regular season, Gaeth came out the victor.
Both Gaeth and Liu will move on to the NW District 3A Girls Tennis Tournament scheduled for May 17-18 at Arlington High School. Joining them at districts will be Bear Lund of Meadowdale and Stephanie Wroblewski of Edmonds-Woodway; Lund and Wroblewski placed third and fourth at the South Divisional tourney to punch their tickets to the district meet.
In doubles’ competition, the pair of Olivia Olson and Hailey Rehnfeldt of Edmonds-Woodway qualified for the district tournament with a third place finish Wednesday in the South Divisional tourney.
In other postseason tournament action for local prep student athletes, the Wesco League 3A South Divisional Tournament for girl golfers was held at Snohomish Golf Course on Wednesday. Medalist honors went to Meadowdale’s Morgan Rood, who shot a seven-over-par 79 to win the tournament by six strokes over second place Jac Longstreth of Shorecrest.
The Lynnwood Royals’ girls track squad got off to a fast start on Day 1 of the Wesco League 3A South Conference Championships Wednesday at Edmonds Stadium. The Royals’ took first place in three of the five finals held on Wednesday: Mikayla Pivec captured both the javelin and the 1600 meters; the team of Jordyn Edwards, Kaitlyn Beers, Valerie Bell and Natalie Brown easily won the 4×200 meter relay.
The defending 3A state long jump champion, Mountlake Terrace’s Chinne Okoronkwo, was surprised by Shorewood’s Wurrie Njadoe in the long jump. Njadoe won the event with a leap of 18-04.50, more than seven inches farther than second place Okoronkwo.
On the boys’ side, Edmonds-Woodway’s Matthew Park won the 1600 meters in a time of 4:23.95; Warrior teammate Grant Whitcutt cleared 14-06.00 to capture first place in the pole vault; and Harris Cutuk from Lynnwood placed first in the shot put with a toss of 4-01.00.
