Prep sports roundup: Lady Hawks lose in volleyball, soccer

The Mountlake Terrace Hawk volleyball team got off to a slow start and never fully recovered Tuesday as the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks overwhelmed the Hawks 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17) in a 2A/3A Wesco League match played at Mountlake Terrace High School.

M-P (3-6 in 2A/3A Wesco League, 3-8 overall) easily got past Terrace in the first game of the match 25-14. The Hawks stayed close in the second game — losing by a score of 25-21 — and captured the third game handily 25-18, but couldn’t sustain the momentum and ultimately succumbed to the Tomahawks.

Terrace’s Sophie Parsons had 30 assists in the match, equally distributing the ball to a number of teammates on the offensive attack. Candice Disney and Zoe Goodmansen each had seven kills for the Hawks; Leanne Weatherby and McKenzie Davis each added six kills.

Terrace (3-7 in 2A/3A Wesco League, 4-8 overall) will travel to Shorecrest High School on Wednesday, Oct. 19, for their final road match of the 2016 regular season. The Hawks-Scots contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

In other MTHS sports action on Tuesday, the Hawk girls soccer team learned why the Arlington Eagles are ranked among the top ten 3A squads in the state; the Eagles stomped Terrace 4-0 at Lynnwood High School.

After giving up just one goal in the first 40 minutes, the Hawks stumbled coming back from the halftime break and allowed two Arlington scores in ten minutes, both by Eagle senior forward McKenzie Buell. Then just past the midway point of the second half, Terrace inadvertently bounced the ball into its own net off an Arlington corner kick, giving the Eagles its fourth and final goal of the night.

The first place Eagles raised their mark to 9-0-1 in the 2A/3A Wesco League, 11-2-1 overall.

The schedule doesn’t get much easier for the Hawks (1-7-2 in 2A/3A Wesco League, 5-7-2 overall) as they must next face the Wesco League’s second place squad, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors, on Thursday, Oct. 20 at Edmonds Stadium. First kick is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Mountlake Terrace’s Jeremy Andsell advanced to the 2A District 1 Boys Tennis singles’ final with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kyle Beuse of Sedro Woolley on Tuesday. Ansdell will face Sehome’s Shane Lynette Friday at the Bellingham Tennis Club for the  District 1 singles title and an automatic berth to the WIAA 2A State Tennis Championships in Seattle next spring.

Terrace’s doubles’ team of Adam Lorraine and Max Leidig were knocked out of the District 1 tennis tourney Tuesday when they lost to Dane Faris and Michael Bornstein of Sehome 6-0, 6-4.
