As high school district championships for spring sports continues this week, more Mountlake Terrace Hawks have qualified for the season-ending state championships that will take place around Washington state next week.
Junior Mike Jenson will be making the trip to the 3A State Boys Golf Championships in Kennewick on May 27-28 after his finish in the district championships held earlier this week at Battle Creek Golf Course in Tulalip. Following an opening round of 85 on Tuesday, Jenson needed to better effort in round two to qualify for state; the junior did so with an 80 on Wednesday. Jenson returns to the state golf championships after qualifying for the event last year as a sophomore.
The 3A District 1 Track and Field Championships at Shoreline Stadium is also a two-day event; competition got underway on Wednesday with three Hawks punching their ticket to the state meet next week.
Junior Chinne Okoronkwo successfully defended her 3A girls long jump title on Wednesday, winning the event with a leap of 17-10.50, and earning a spot at the state meet. Joining her from Terrace will be Hailee Malins in the discus; Malins’ effort of 123-04 – a new Mountlake Terrace school record – was good enough for second place at the district meet. Also qualifying for the state meet was senior Alisha Clingan in the javelin; Clingan finished second at the district meet with a toss of 115-01.
Terrace stands in second place in the girls’ team standings after the first day of district competition. Other Hawks earning team points were Katherine Gustafson and Katherine Walter, who place fifth and eighth in the 1600 meters.
On the boys side, junior Michael Liddell had a career best effort in the long jump of 21-04.75, good enough for second place in the event, while freshman teammate Alex Woodard earned a fourth place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-00.00.
